The Association of Ontario Land Surveyors has a branch for GIS. Membership is open to anyone around the world, but just like any professional designation, there are education and experience requirements and an articling period.
The profession was extended to include GIS (the designation is OLS OLIP (GIM) -> Ontario Land Surveyor, Ontario Land Information Professional, Geographic Information Manager) a few years ago, but already there are contracts and job openings appearing that require GIM.
This is the only professional designation (like Doctor or Lawyer is a Profession, not like 'you act in a professional manner') in the world that I know of, although other jurisdictions are coming along. Many states provide a license, but the requirements can range anywhere from filling out a form to something similar to the AOLS. URISA and others provide certification, but that is a bit different.
You can find out more at www.aols.org=20

OK, here's another one. I've been prompted by others about joining a professional associatin for GIS.... Do we have one? I've seen information on ACSM, but are there others? This dovetails into some research as to where I might publish several articles.
Thanks,

No question, I would pick GIS Monitor. The last issue is at (http://www.gismonitor.com/news/newsletter/archive/123003.php). It is free, and Adena delivers a consistently insightful product.
