I currently receive a few hard-copy GIS publications in addition to the on-line ones mentioned yesterday. I prefer hard copy because when I go home from the office, the last thing I want to do is turn on the computer. And if your workplace is anything like mine, you don't have time to read the online stuff there.
I receive GeoWorld, GeoSpatial Solutions and the ArcNews collection. Currently, I pay for none of these.
GeoWorld used to be my favourite, but I find that for the last year or so it has become less and less appealing. As Dimitri put it - it seems mostly like advertising disguised as articles. The one exception is Joseph Berry's monthly article on raster GIS - a bit of classroom in the magazine. More articles like that would be great. However, if I had to pay the exorbitant subscription for this magazine, it would be dropped in a flash (a Canadian subscription would cost me $90 US or about $140 Cdn - definitely not worth it).
GeoSpatial Solutions is new to me - I am only on my third copy. Perhaps the novelty hasn't worn off yet, but I find the articles a little more comprehensive than GeoWorld's. So far, at least, they seem to be more applied, too. And it is FREE! Check out http://www.geospatial-online.com . Also, it uses a slightly less glossy paper, which appeals to my environmentally conscious mind.
Then there is the ArcNews suite of advertising - including Arc User and, for us in Canada, Arc North News. I find the format of ArcNews great for the lunch room. As for the other two - I find the articles are almost always very interesting and the "workshop" type articles are very informative. I always like to learn how to do new things with the software, on top of reading articles about what others have done.
I once subscribed to a few others (Geomatica for instance) but I found the cost/benefit ratio too high.
I hope this info is helpful in your "filtering" challenge. Perhaps a SUM when you decide which ones you want to keep letting the list know what you dropped and why and what you kept and why. rg

So, if you had to pick just one GIS publication to read for a year, what would it be?(Free is good, but I'm happy to pay for one that's worth it.)
Thanks in advance. GP
