Subject: RE: [gislist] Do GIS Professionals Have A "Professional Associati on?"
Date:  01/07/2004 10:20:00 PM
From:  Sonny Parafina

I completely agree with Peter Batty's position in the article.

When the URISA GIS certification was open for public comment, I made the
comment that the certification process should be like the CISSP (Certified
Information Systems Security Professional) exam. The CISSP certification
has been described as mile wide and inch deep but, which sounds a lot like
GIS. It is also known as one of the most difficult certifications to earn.
The CISSP test consists of both a written and practical exam, no grandfather
clause, no points for presenting at a conference, etc.

Unfortunately, URISA did not take the suggestion seriously. Maybe that's
why employers (such as Batty) won't take the certification seriously.

The jury is still out regarding this certification attempt. Seems (to me)
to be a power play by certain GIS-related groups. He who writes the
dictionary then may tell others how to speak.
