Subject: Re: [gislist] RE: power play by certain GIS-related groups
Date:  01/08/2004 11:10:02 AM
From:  Brian J. Hill

I don't have much of an idea about how difficult it would be to come up
with an exam for GIS certification - I don't have that kind of time on
my hands. However, a point system? This just seems completly
ridiculous to me. If URISA wants certification to be taken seriously
it would come up with a process that rewards a professional's
abilities, not how much course work or years they have spent as a GIS
Manager/Analyst/Tech etc. I'm sure that we all know a few people who
have been in the industry for many years that know less than others who
have only been working for a few. Also, why reward the person who got
all C's in their GIS classes the same as the person who got all A's?
No, a point system is just plain wrong IMHO. If there is to be
certification, I will not take it seriously unless it is merit based.
For those who say this opinion is unfair, they need to examine their
definition of "fair".
