Subject: RE: [gislist] RE: power play by certain GIS-related groups
Date:  01/08/2004 12:45:01 PM
From:  David Brubacher

I posted earlier about the certification by the Association of Ontario
Land Surveyors. In light of the recent discussions on this thread I must
say:

The AOLS requires 2 years of articles, oral and written exams and we are
putting peer review in place. Someone who is 'all hat and no cattle' (as
some cattle folk say) will not qualify.

We recognised the widely disparate nature of the profession and thus
made our requirements much more than just paper. There were a number of
candidates with more than a decade of GIS under their belts, but it was
all by rote. As soon as they got into unknown territory they couldn't
function. We did not approve membership.

Neither do I have any idea what a GIS certification exam would look
like.

But as one who has worked with - and sometimes managed
- GIS wonks in a developing country I know that I would place far higher
credence on practical capabaility than theoretical card-carryingness.
There seems to be more than enough work to be done, and too many
hopefuls that see merit in cartographic detail rather than the rigour of
their analytical methods or the appropriate clarity of their
presentations.

I am no great believer in any form of certification but, if it is to
apply, let be based on practice and result rather than only on study and
qualification.

My two bobs' worth.
