Well, well, well. So much for the GISList being an open and impartial public forum. It looks like when Glenn Letham departed, much more went with him than we knew... I sincerely hope you're doing well, Glenn.
If anyone would be interested in creating a true public GIS forum--one that is not the private holding of an organization apparently intending to use it for its own ends, but one that is instead thoroughly dedicated to the good of the community--then please write me with an expression of interest. (Please don't reply only to GISList, because we cannot trust that your reply will make it through uncensored--excuse me, un-"moderated".) I have the resources and capabilities to make this happen if there is enough interest in it.
Of course, if you're happy with the wider implications of Herman's threat, feel free to tell me that, instead. I gratefully appreciate all reasoned points of view, whether or not they support mine (or my business).
After this message is posted I suspect my ability to communicate through this channel will become greatly diminished :-), so watch the usual places--GIS Monitor, Directionsmag.com, and other lists (such as MapInfo-L and the independent ArcView list)--for further information.

PS Something like this happened before in a similar context, when people lost faith in the independence of the ESRI-maintained lists. For a review of the issues, check out the exchange of letters from four years ago (in reverse chronological order):
http://www.directionsmag.com/letters.asp?letter_id=27 (Ted Florence, Avenza) http://www.directionsmag.com/letters.asp?letter_id=25 (Jeff Cole, Blue Marble Geographics) http://www.directionsmag.com/letters.asp?letter_id=24 (Bill Thoen, MapInfo-L) http://www.directionsmag.com/letters.asp?letter_id=23 (Myself) http://www.directionsmag.com/letters.asp?letter_id=22 (Barry Zickuhr, ESRI-Olympia, writing on his own behalf) http://www.directionsmag.com/news.asp?news_id=44 (The article that started it all)
One result of this exchange was the directory of GIS-related internet discussion lists still maintained by Directions Magazine at http://lists.directionsmag.com/discussion/ . Many of these lists--including GISList itself, I believe--were created as a direct response to the issues raised.
(At the time these articles and letters appeared, I had no relationship with Directions Magazine. Since then I have served as an editorial consultant and as an interim editor for a year before Directions landed Joe Francica as its current editor. I am presently a minor stockholder. Directions, which does provide independent journalism, competes with SpatialNews for advertisers and readers. My offer to create a GIS discussion list is completely unrelated to any connections I may have with Directions or its employees or stockholders and has not been presented to or discussed with anybody related to Directions.)
