If an application (and popular applications are not)is not written for HT, you will not see much of a performance increase (in fact, HT may hurt performance in small amounts in some situations). There are numerous reviews out there chronicling this. If customizing a new computer, I would go for it: I recently got a Dell Laptop and it was only $50 more for HT on the same speed chip. On the other hand, I would not recommend buying a new computer just for HT: truth be told, custom building an AMD 64 bit system would most likely yield better performance and result in more bang for your buck as software (slowly) turns to 64.

I am preparing to buy a new desktop and want to know if the Pentium 4 with hyper threading is a benefit for GIS (ESRI products) or if it is of no use... I ask this in response to the following footnote on the spec sheet for the desktop =20 =20 **The Hyper-Threading feature is a new technology designed to improve performance of multi-threaded software products: please contact your software provider to determine software compatibility. Not all customers or software applications will benefit from the use of hyperthreading =20 Processor: Choice of IntelR PentiumR 4 with Hyper-Threading** or IntelR CeleronR=20
Thanks! =20 Elizabeth Elizabeth Martinez Director GIS / IT The Forestland Group, LLC 1512 East Franklin Street, Suite 104 Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27516 919-929-2497 919-929-8265 fax =20 _______________________________________________ gislist mailing list gislist@lists.geocomm.com http://lists.geocomm.com/mailman/listinfo/gislist
