Dear list members,
We too became disillusioned with ESRI when they rolled out ArcGIS. Most of our clients can't afford the hefty price tag on a per seat basis, the performance is poor and it locks up more times than you can say "Segmentation violation!". For projects that did not need a super powerful GIS like ArcINFO we came up with a work around. We built our own GIS desktop product. Its extensible via Visual Basic, features some high-end features not typically found in free GIS products, and what's more we decided to give it away for free.
