Subject: RE: [gislist] SRTM DEM clean
Date:  01/16/2004 09:35:01 AM
From:  True, Cynthia D.

I have been using the SIR DEM's for a while and am generally happy with
the results. Having said that, there was some significant work involved
in the preprocessing. Here is an overview of the steps that I went
through.

1. Download binary files from Internet.
2. Import binary files to Arc Grid format.
3. Fill in NODATA areas with elevations from NED using MERGE.
4. Find range in a 3x3 cell neighborhood - FOCALRANGE.
5. Select all areas with a range > 100 meters.
6. SHRINK spike areas by one cell all around.
7. Fill in those "spikes" with surrounding elevation - NIBBLE.=20

One must keep in mind that tall, dense evergreens, buildings, and some
com towers will show up in the SIR DEM.

Good Luck,
dt

Subject: [gislist] SRTM DEM clean

Hi All,
Some time ago I asked a question if someone of you have experience with
SRTM raw data.
I have them in raster format but there are many errors in the data.
When I generated contours from the raster data they are very easily
seen.
I tried many functions of ArcInfo to clean the DEM, but still I am not
satisfied with the result and I would like the process to go much
faster.
I would appreciate any response and advice on cleaning DEM raster data
from sinks, peaks etc. using ArcInfo.
Actually this question concern not specificaly SRTM data but any DEM
data.

Thank you in advance,
Vassil Vassilev
