Folks,

I appreciate Sonny's plug. I would add a few notes:

o The most recent release of my personal builds of OpenEV (which I call
OpenEV_FW) for windows is at:

ftp://ftp.remotesensing.org/gdal/openev/OpenEV_FW_163.zip

o OpenEV uses GDAL (a raster library I work on) for HDF, DTED and other
format support. The OpenEV_FW kit includes commandline GDAL utilities
for data translation which can be used to produce DTED data. However, I
don't think there is a practical way to convert data to DTED from the
OpenEV GUI. GDAL can also be used to convert data to ArcView supported
GeoTIFF or other formats. General GDAL information is available at:

http://www.remotesensing.org/gdal/

o Andrey Kiselev has actually done all the HDF and HDF-EOS work in GDAL, so
those kudos belong to him. HDF is a tricky format and not all variations
work smoothly in GDAL and OpenEV. However, if you read the GDAL HDF
support page you can usually accomplish what you need.

http://www.remotesensing.org/gdal/frmt_hdf4.html

o OpenEV does include support for 3D visualization using OpenGL.

o OpenEV (and GDAL) are free (aka open source) software.

And finally, I have a strong suspicion that Alex's original problem is really
that his HDF file is corrupt, and he won't get far with any software if that
is the case. Running "gdalinfo -mm <hisfile>.hdf" on the file in question
might give some useful diagnostics to check the file.

Best regards,
