Subject: RE: [gislist] arcinfo
Date:  02/13/2004 07:30:02 AM
From:  Leonie Meiring

Begging your pardon sir, and respecting that you do not wish to indulge
in controversy or arguments, but how is one to gain experience in the
first place? If one does not ponder over the basic theorems of GIS
written in books, how is one going to understand the practical
application of GIS in a high-end product such as ArcInfo? How will one
then understand topology, rasters, vectors, TIN's, Thiessens polygons
and use them correctly in Arcinfo etc.? If one did not need bookish
knowledge, why would ESRI even bother to "waste" money on publishing
comprehensive manuals? Experience is gained through applying knowledge,
and knowledge is gained by reading "books" or "manuals" and "playing"
around with the program. Not everyone has the means to formally study a
GIS degree. But this should not hamper one in learning GIS and ArcInfo
for yourself.

Kind regards
Leonie =20

I am not indulging in any controversy or arguments, Bookish knowledge is
not good enough to use Arc Info and make money? to generate out of such
product use of high end technology, you need experience. Just to play
around with Arc Info? No-Issue/

is here, but if it is to opine that unless=20
this person does some sort of Masters in GIS she will not be able to use

ArcInfo, then I disagree. While she *does* say "all the basic
knowledge",=20
which sounds daunting, she also says "to start using [ArcInfo]".

The book I recommend will give her a good start.
