Subject: [gislist] Historical Maps and GIS
Date:  02/14/2004 05:50:01 PM
From:  Derek Link

Dear list,

By day I am GIS analyst at an engineering company and
by night I have begun volunteering at my community's
local historical society. The historical society has
an UNBELIEVABLE collection of old maps of the area.
Tens of thousands of them, going back to before the
Revolution. (This is a neighborhood now in NYC, but
independent befor ethe consolidation of NYC's five
boroughs in 1898.) I am going to put together a
project with the group, to incorporate some of these
maps into a GIS. There is so much information in the
society's storage room. Obviously, this is a
long-term project. I don't even know what's in the
drawers yet, and it will take lots of time just to
digitize and georeference. Before I get started, I
have two very general questions:

1. Have any of you been involved in this type of
project before? I would like to establish a dialog
with someone with experience doing this type of thing.

2. How open is ESRI to grant applications from
community groups? One thing I would like to do is set
up a work station with 8.3 at the site. Now that 9 is
in advanced beta-testing, maybe some copies of 8.x
could be available for cheap or free for a worthy
cause. I thought I would write a grant to ESRI for
the group for a copy of the ArcGIS suite. I will give
them a computer that I assemble from my parts
graveyard. I only have access to 3.2 at home, which
is enough to get started but not a long term solution.
I can not use work resources for this project.

Thanks for any leads/ideas.
