Thank you very much to all who replied!
After another week of searching, I've decided to walk the dust path: I've downloaded VMAP0 and GTOPO30 and we will be working on them to create the maps. After that we will know exactly if and what data we need to achieve the level of detail needed, and the search will continue from there.
Below is the sum of the replies:
Original Post:
Dear list,
I'm trying to find a world database suitable for print. I work for an editor that wants to print its own atlasses. We have the data for Europe, and for the rest of the world I think that a 1:5.000.000 database should be enough. Anyone has/knows/reccomends/care to comment on that?
Thanks, Dan CRACIUN --------------------------------- Replies:
maybe you could take a look at the Digital Chart of the World Server, scale 1:1.000.000 at http://www.maproom.psu.edu/dcw/

Bartholomew Collins have a digital world dataset a 1:5M. A larger scale (1:1M) data set is Global Insight, produced by Europa Technologies. We use both of these here for GIS and digital mapping with printed output.
