Dear listers,
STRM 90-m DEMs for Africa are now available at this FTP-thread:
ftp://edcsgs9.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/srtm/Africa
30-m SRTM DEMs are now available only for USA, future prospects on their public distribution for other territories is not clear.
Free SRTM DEMs are interesting, in part, in that one may use these raw data to decode forest boundaries (SRTM elevations are 2-5m larger in forests), roads, tree boundings of agricultural fields, and so on. Their essential disadvantage is that elevations are rounded to whole number of meters. Nevertheless, these are the only high-resolution global DEMs.

NASA and NIMA have released the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for Africa and the Middle East. These preliminary elevation data are posted at 3 arc-sec and are in the same format as previous releases for North and South America and Eurasia. They may be accessed by ftp at: edcftp.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/srtm/Africa and will soon be on the USGS Seamless Server site. Documentation is also available at the ftp site.
The last data release including Australia, New Zealand, and other islands, is planned for June, 2004.
We also note that a public bulletin board for exchange of information between users of SRTM data is now available. The bulletin board may be accessed at: http://pub6.dream-tools.net/tools/messages.mv?index%20srtm2004forum
Please note that this forum was set up to allow anyone to discuss publicly information regarding the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. The site is independent from the JPL SRTM web site and is neither funded nor supported by JPL, NASA, NGA, nor any related partners.
