Latino/Latin American Fellowship Competition: GIS and Remote Sensing Course at Smithsonian's National Zoological Park=20
Ofrecimiento de becas para Latinos/Latinoamericanos Curso de SIG y Sensores Remotos en el Smithsonian`s National Zoological = Park
Application Deadline: May 21, 2004 Fecha Limite: 21 de Mayo, 2004
The Smithsonian's National Zoological Park (NZP) announces a competition = for fellowships for a two-week Spanish language training course in = Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing, to be held = between Saturday, August 28 and Thursday, September 9, 2004. The course, = held at NZP's well-known Conservation and Research Center, is designed to = train conservation and wildlife managers in practical applications of = geospatial analysis tools. Deadline for receipt of all application = materials: May 21, 2004. See below for application guidelines. This = project has received support from the Latino Initiatives Pool, administered= by the Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives. =20
This training course focuses on teaching the uses of GIS, Global Positionin= g Systems (GPS) and satellite remote sensing and their applications to = practical problems in wildlife conservation, management, and research. It = combines, in Spanish translation, two successful Conservation GIS courses = this lab has taught in Front Royal and internationally for several years, = "Introduction to the Use of ArcGIS and Remote Sensing for Conservation and = Wildlife Management" and "Advanced GIS for Conservation and Wildlife = Management: Land Cover Change and Endangered Species." The instructors aim = to provide participants with a broad understanding of the present state = and uses of geospatial technologies, providing a realistic vision of the = research possibilities in combining fieldwork with GIS analysis. For more = information on all the Conservation GIS training courses offered at = NZP-CRC, please see <http://natzoo.si.edu/ConservationAndScience/Conservati= onGIS/GIS_training/> =09 Geospatial technologies have become essential tools for modern conservation= biology studies focused on mitigating large-scale global change effects = such as climate change, desertification, deforestation, biodiversity loss, = and species extinction. A solid understanding of GIS and related = technologies is virtually a requirement for conservation biologists in = today's competitive labor market. The training course exercises draw on = real-life lessons of NZP-CRC scientists' conservation and management-based = research activities, exploring valuable applications of geospatial = technologies to real conservation problems. The fellowships offer an = opportunity for U.S. Latino and Latin American conservation researchers = and practicioners to acquire these skills and perspectives. =20
Space is limited! Eligible U.S. Latinos and Latin Americans may direct = their fellowship application materials to Kate Christen, at christenc@si.ed= u. Application materials will consist of a one-page essay-in SPANISH-descr= ibing your actual and/or intended use of GIS in your project(s), and a = short c.v., listing at least two references and their phone and e-mail = contact information. Students and recent graduates should also send an = up-to-date transcript. In addition, please arrange for two individuals = familiar with your academic and/or professional work to send us directly = (as e-mail attachment) a letter of recommendation. Please also specify = how you heard about this fellowship competition. One year after the = training, all participants will provide our Conservation GIS lab with a = follow-up report explaining how they have applied to their daily work = concepts and techniques learned in this training. Fellowships will include = course tuition, room and board, and airfare and ground transportation to = CRC. =20
