Subject: RE: [gislist] GPS

Not entirely correct on the 15 foot thing. There are a number of GPS
receivers that can readily achieve one to two meter accuracy and some can
even achieve consistent sub-meter accuracies depending upon the differential
corrections that they then rely upon. For most Garmins, they rely on WAAS
correction. Its free and essentially available everywhere in the
Continental US and Europe. This combo provides the 3 to 5 meter accuracy you
have heard (it may actually be better for most of the day depending on a
number of things). If you step up the GPS value and invest in one of the
Trimble handhelds as well as purchase a subscription to Omnistar VBS
corrections(http://www.omnistar.com) sub-meter is achieved. The
disadvantage in the subscription is the need to have yet another piece of
hardware, cables, and antenna as well as battery hung around your neck or on
your back.

Lastly, moving way up the GPS accuracy chain indeed you can purchase a
survey grade system. In this case the magical sub-meter accuracy (more
typically 10cm) can be achieved by post processing the corrections. The
cost steps are under $300 for good WAAS GPS handhelds, from $1500 to $3000
for sub-meter handhelds with Omnistar subscriptions, and $10,000 to $30,000
for survey grade equipment.

Subject: [gislist] GPS

I'm looking at GPS handheld units that I can use to map
our Utility System. Example ...get waypoints on Power Poles,Fire
Hydrants,etc... Someone has told me that in
order to get within 15 feet or less that I would need "survey
grade" equipment. I know someone that works for Soil
Conservation and they have a Garmin with a backpack.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. MB
