There are systems such as these =
http://www.navtechgps.com/supply/difsys.asp but my impression is that =
the "sporting goods" type units are not designed for field data =
collection - i.e. you can awkwardly input limited info about "waypoints" =
and convert the waypoint files to GIS but you can't really set up a data =
dictionary for efficiency. These would be best suited to "locating" =
points that already exist in your GIS. Delorme makes a unit that works =
with a PDA and you can post-process the files supposedly to meter level =
but I don't know what the software can do as far as data collection. It =
might be worth checking into. We use Trimble equipment for initial data =
collection. It is expensive on the front end, but pays for itself in =
time savings and reliability. =20

Subject: [gislist] GPS

I'm looking at GPS handheld units that I can use to map
our Utility System. Example ...get waypoints on Power Poles,Fire =
Hydrants,etc... Someone has told me that in
order to get within 15 feet or less that I would need "survey
grade" equipment. I know someone that works for Soil=20
Conservation and they have a Garmin with a backpack.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. MB
