Subject: [gislist] Data Projection Woes
Date:  05/28/2004 05:25:01 PM
From:  Michele Mattix

Hi List -

I'm having a problem that has been haunting my understanding of GIS for a
while now. I'm using ArcGIS 8.3. I have a bunch of different data for a
few counties in Colorado and everything is in NAD 1927 UTM Zone 13N, GCS
North American 1927. So, I went to download and add 30x30 meter DEM data
-- got it all ready to go, and when I add it to my map, it doesn't line up.
It's way the heck in another galaxy relative to the rest of the data on my
map, in fact. Part of getting the DEM data ready to go included using
toolbox to set the projection of the DEM data to match the profile above --
so those data are the same as all of the other data in the project.

I read about DEMs and the data I have are supposed to be NAD 1927 -- again,
as are the other data in my project. So what's the dealio? Why won't they
line up? And what can I do to make it right? Also, where can I find some
USER FRIENDLY resources for dealing with the problem in general?

Thanks for your help.

Michele
