On a related tangent, I think, and not being a programmer, a big "your welcome" for any knee-slapping laughs this questions generates, but why/why aren't GIS applications developed in machine/assembly language ? I frequently visit www.grc.com for nifty tools, and have always been impressed with their technical resources, and they exclusively use machine language to keep things fast. Granted, their applications are very focused and single-tasked, but why couldn't that development model be scaled to something as robust as a full GIS ? Ok, when you recover fully from the laughter, you can let me know....
