Subject: RE: [gislist] ArcGIS 9 - recommend postponing installation
Date:  06/01/2004 03:45:01 PM
From:  Ross, Gregory K.

I think any organization that has Visual Basic (or VBA) familiar programmers
or casual users would argue with you on the 'efficient' point of ESRI
software. Only other GIS software that can come close to competing in
efficient automation would be some Java based programs...........However,
I'll bet there are more Visual Basic (or VBA) familiar users out there than
Java familiar users......Not to mention that ESRI ArcGIS Engine provides
application programming interfaces (APIs) for COM, .NET, Java, and C++.

ESRI products do not perform what exactly?

Automation is the key to efficient software workflow. If you can't automate
the process, that means it is high in "user time" and demands rather
specific tasks that are not even close to being efficient no matter what
software you use. Software is simply a means of automating tasks........

ESRI products do not, in my opinion, perform given their cost.. I would
never recommend them to anyone interested in making a profit, or getting the
job done. I certainly wouldn't use the word 'efficient' to describe any
aspect of a workflow involving ESRI products...
