Subject: Re: [gislist] problem integrating comma-delimited db file
Date:  06/03/2004 03:05:01 PM
From:  RICK GRAY

I bring my text file through Excel, set the format of the cells in each column,
then save as a dbaseIV file. By doing this, you "preformat" the columns to
match your attribute table.

If someone knows a better way, I'm all ears.

Hello listers,

I hope someone with database knowledge can help me with this.

AV 3.2

I have to export the DB from a shapefile (2000+ points) to a web server as
a comma-delimited file, where it is used to display the points over a
static map. OK so far. Then various people add points through the web,
using attributes checkboxes to populate the same fields as the original
shapefile.

This new DB file is then sent back to me as a comma-delimited file, and I
am supposed to merge the new points back into the original shapefile. (or a
new copy :-)

The problem comes in now. When the comma-delimited file comes back to me I
can enter it as an events theme (using UTM coordinates included) BUT. . . .
the resulting shapefile does not have the same field characteristics as the
original file. Specifically, the fields do not have the same number of
characters. They only have as many characters as the comma-delimited file
actually used.

Such as, a field that had 6 character spaces originally now has only 1
space if the file only had a one-letter entry in it.

These files will merge, but do not fill in the fields that are now
incompatible. The names are OK, but the character spaces are not right.

Is there any way that I can get the new data to go back into a shapefile
that has the correct field characteristics?

Anxiously awaiting any hints, will sum,

Rixanne
