"1. When I downloaded the DEM data (90x90 m), it came with a projection
file which has the said info. When I look at the coord system properties
of my files in catalog, it shows that the coord system for the DEM files is
undefined. How do I use the .PRJ file to apply it to the DEM data?"
to my knowledge 8.3 does not have a method for projecting/reprojecting
raster data. at least not with an arceditor license. arcgis 9 has some nice
tools for defining and projecting rasters
"2. Once I've done that, I need to project the DEM files into UTM nad 27.
I mentioned a few ways to do that in my previous message, but I was
unsuccessful on my last grid data which doesn't fill me with optimism this
time around. Suggestions?"

if you can't apply a coord sys to the rasters then you are in trouble.
if any of the rasters have a prj
have you tried adding any vector data first(in desired coord system) and
trying the on the fly projection in arcmap?

hope this helps, zt

Subject: [gislist] Data Projection Woes II

Greetings once again, List,

Okay -- I'm having a hard time with this project. I am using ArcGIS 8.3
desktop with Spatial Analyst. I have a bunch of data (raster and vector)
that is set to UTM Zone 13N Nad 27 and a couple of DEM files which I want
to add to my map. The DEM files are in GCS nad27. My problem is twofold:

1. When I downloaded the DEM data (90x90 m), it came with a projection
file which has the said info. When I look at the coord system properties
of my files in catalog, it shows that the coord system for the DEM files is
undefined. How do I use the .PRJ file to apply it to the DEM data?

2. Once I've done that, I need to project the DEM files into UTM nad 27.
I mentioned a few ways to do that in my previous message, but I was
unsuccessful on my last grid data which doesn't fill me with optimism this
time around. Suggestions?

Thank you very much -- and I will SUM.

Michele
