Point well taken. It's the model I am pointing out, not the implementation
strategy. Several years ago, when I started this company, it was pushed as
an ASP. When I pitched most, if not all the major ISVs and even data
companies, and presented business case-level metrics, user-survey results,
etc. that were compelling, they all nodded in agreement, but the glass
stares across the tables told me that they were totally unprepared to deal
with the new economic model that supporting a true ASP business model in the
GIS industry would mean to them, in all aspects. It is still the case
today, and this unfortunately reluctance, as an industry, has contributed to
keeping the industry growth (both in # of users and total revenue)
relatively flat. It presents insurmountable obstacles to an untapped user
base that would otherwise have the technology in place and using it to solve
real problems today.
