Subject: RE: [gislist] GIS Certification?
Date:  06/10/2004 03:45:01 PM
From:  Dawson, Theresa A LRH

And goodness knows every HR person I've ever met in my life has been
thoroughly versed in the work they're hiring me for. All of my supervisors
know what I do as well as I do or better. I can sit down with anyone who
interviews me for a position and have a meaningful conversation about
choosing the correct cell size for various spatial analyses.

Of course, I live in my own little fantasy world where I never have to
parallel park, too.

The truth is my boss hasn't the foggiest idea how I do what I do. He only
knows I give him good analyses. I started our GIS program and I'm the only
person who could realistically vet an applicant for our office. What do you
think my chances of being in on an Army interview are? None. It's handled
through an automated computer system that looks specifically for key words
like "Certification". We've got good people doing good work, but it's sure
not because our HR people knew how to pick 'em.

You can sneer all you like at the concept of certification, but it doesn't
change the fact that half the people hiring "GIS Specialists" don't know
what they want, much less need, and they'll latch on to things you may think
are meaningless, but which they can translate to "Something like a PE". If
it gives an applicant an edge, then they'd be an idiot not to get the
certification.

Following what MG states, there is an old business adage WRT hiring -
Attitude over aptitude. Certification does not measure attitude.
