I've just ordered ArcView 9. Based on Anthony's and Charlene's comments I'm
concerned. This is my first installation of this software. Should I have
ordered 8.3? But then shouldn't I start with the latest software?
Any advice?

Judy

I had the same feeling about ArcGIS server and ArcGIS engine. I may have
just missed the fact that these were described as stand-along products
you had to buy additionally, but it did not seem clear to me in the demo
I attended that these were additional product, they seemed to be just
touted as another feature of 9, and not as an optional upgrade. And,
until Anthony's post, I did not k now ArcGlobe required 3D analyst. I
was just talking to someone that was saying that 9 was 'worth it' just
for Globe, but now I am not so sure if he would say that again...

In spite of the fact that I have had to uninstall v9.0 and reinstall
v8.3, I
wanted to point out to any on the list considering an upgrade. When I
say
the first inklings of what might be in v9.0 some time ago, the crowd
"ooohhs
and ahhhhhhs" for the ArcGlobe functionality were what got my attention
in
anticipation. I honestly do not recall anyone at that time, nor in the
many
"infomercials" that ESRI has done since, making it clear that ArcGlobe
requires the 3D Analyst extension to work. Perhaps it is buried in some
fine print that only lawyers read, or maybe it is more prominent, but I
failed to pick up on this until after the installation [subsequently
undone]
was complete. This was, momentarily, a real bummer. So, if you are
considering upgrading to leverage this functionality for any reason, be
sure
you count the true cost of the extensions as well. I am sure ESRI has
this
covered, at least from a legal "truth in advertising" perspective, but
it
could have been more prominent during the launch.

Anthony
