Subject: RE: [gislist] Locating animals
Date:  06/23/2004 05:40:01 PM
From:  Neil Havermale

Use of a laser for range finding out past 1500 meters is not simple. Within
1500 meters there are several potential solutions. Lasertech, MDL, and a
couple other lesser have like hand held devices mostly aimed at traffic
speed management. With these systems ranging can be had without reflectors
if the target itself has reasonably goog characteristics like flat and hard.

Another solution would be to use a laser ranging and compass binocular like
those from Leica and or Rockwell. Another solution might be the concept of
triangulation which at 5000 meters will have some level of error.
MediaMapper via VMS300 has integration to digital cameras and video records
as well most of the popular laser system. VMSx will log camera heading
automatically. The MediaMapper Elite version also has built in tools
providing a triangular offset feature for imagry taken from two positions
(http://www.mediamapper.com).

Tom Craven,

Sounds like DragonPlot could serve for Travis' needs in locating animals...
