...and to use this layer/legend with a new dataset you first have to add the lyr to the map, and then set the data source afterwards (opposite to 3.x)

you can save right click the layer and select "save as layer file". this will save all of your symbologies, label and display properties.

Hello!
In ArcView you can save AVL (legend files) - how do you do that with ArcMap using ArcInfo? I can see where you can import an .avl or take the symbology from another layer in the layer properties, but can't see where you can save it...
