You can currently test drive the new flagship Autodesk product that picks up where AUtdoesk Map 2004 left off, it's called Map 2005 3D. I am both an ESRI and Autodesk user, however, not for CAD related stuff. I do have to say, when it comes to web-based GIS app's, I still feel that Autodesk Mapguide has ESRI beat on simplicity, a major factor for me. As far as I know, AUtodesk does handle projection conversions and the only thing seemingly lacking is the utilities provided in some of ESRI's ArcGIS extensions. The interface in Autodesk map is not what I am used to since it follows the CAD look and feel and I just haven't had enough time to hurdle the software learning curve to make it worthwhile.
I guess one has to look at pricing as a major issue since both are not cheap, but I am able to use educational pricing at ESRI and there is no such thing with Autodesk.
