Subject: [gislist] GIS vs. CAD
Date:  06/29/2004 01:05:02 PM
From:  Gary Andersen

We use both Autodesk Map 3D 2005 and ArcView 9.0. Each has its place.=20

=20

We do design work in Autodesk Map that would be cumbersome at best and
often impossible in ArcView. In addition, almost all files we receive
from Survey Engineering Companies are in CAD.=20

=20

However, CAD cannot match GIS for geoprocessing, handling databases and
aerials and a number of other processes. Even with Raster Design on top
of Autodesk Map I prefer GIS (ArcView) for handling rasters. It is much
faster when zooming and panning. In my opinion Autodesk Map (CAD) is
cumbersome when it comes to manipulating aerials. The redraw is very
slow.

=20

To Autodesk credit, Map 3D can import and export shapefiles that include
all the metadata. We can create and attach metadata in Autodesk Map and
export that to ArcView. When we import shapefiles into Autodesk Map the
metadata is imported along with the vector information. Map 3D can also
have a projection assigned and will reproject on the fly a file in
another projection when added to a project.

=20

To sum it up, we do most of the design work in CAD and the geoprocessing
in GIS. Most final Exhibits are produced in GIS as well. We need both
applications.
