Subject: [gislist] FW: [gis_info] RFID Players?
Date:  07/02/2004 07:45:01 AM
From:  Matt Hannon

Hi list!

There is a pretty interesting article on similar stuff (micro-geography and
indoor LBS) in the June issue of GeoWorld:

here's the link:

how will GIS adopt for the "indoor world"? are maps available for all
buildings?

Hey Travis,

There is lots going on in this arena and it is already dovetailing with GIS
technology in many ways. I call this convergence of GIS Asset
Management-like technologies or supply chain integrations and RFid
technology: microGIS.

The RFID technology allows you to store a unique identification number on
any asset via a tiny RFID chip or tag. It is kind of a social security
number or barcode for anything you want to track. For example you could put
an RFID tag on a shipping container, chair, laptop, people, box of razors,
or a crate of raw materials. Of course, people already stick RFIDs in their
pets. GIS technology enables you to integrate the information associated
with these assets (RFID tags) with its current location, travel history, or
proximity to other assets. GIS technology also allows you to perform
spatial analysis, visualization, and integration of this information to any
type of enterprise information system (supply chain, sales reporting, asset
management).

There are several resources on the RFiD front and the main one that appears
to be emerging as the standard is a consortium called Auto-ID. Actually it
is now called the EPCGlobal ID consortium. This is from their website.
"EPCglobal, Inc., a joint venture between EAN International and the Uniform
Code Council, Inc., carries forth the research completed by the Auto-ID
Center to work toward the development of industry-accepted standards and
commercial adoption. The newly formed organization has taken on the mission
of working with end users, and hardware, software, and integration solutions
providers to build the EPC Network infrastructure and support

implementation." Walmart and Sun are large supporters of this standards
organization. Here is an article that talks about Walmarts latest RFID
endeavors.

ESRI is also working with our partners in the RFId market. We are working
closely with Sun, Intel, SAP and others and I'd love to hear what you are
thinking about doing. Give me a call and we can talk more. Oh and have
fun in Idaho!

I've been watching this technology emerge for years and am interested in
hearing what folks are doing in this area. Please call or shoot me an
email.

Thanks

Rob

Listers,

Could someone please send me a list of the top/largest firms whom specialize
in RFID technology?

Thanks,
Travis
