Subject: [gislist] GPS Accuracy (Garmin Units)
Date:  07/08/2004 09:05:01 AM
From:  Angus Burns

Hello All

I need to be able to correctly place some scanned
linework on top of some DOQQ's, the problem I am
running into is there are no discernable features
commonplace on the linework and the DOQQ's. I was
hoping to use a GPS to mark some points on the
linework in the field and import these points as
shapefiles so I will have something to go by when I
attempt to place the linework on the DOQQ's correctly.
I did not want to purchase a trimble pathfinder unit
and the trimble office software due to cost restraints
and was looking into using a Garmin Unit, with the
software "DNR Garmin" available from the DNR in
Minnesota. This will be less accurate than the Trimble
units but I was reading on the Garmin website that
WAAS units have accuracy less than 3 meters. Has
anyone used the Garmin units with WAAS and what has
been your experience and or opinion about this in
regards to positional accuracy?

Thank You
