Subject: RE: [gislist] SUM: French postal code dataset - some information more
Date:  07/13/2004 06:55:01 AM
From:  Christophe CLAVEL

If ever you need more, i.e. professional databases, you may try
www.intercarto.com who is a well-known and 1st French official reseller of
IGN data (the French mapping agency). See their "IGN online" download area.

As for postal codes, you have to know that postal areas (5 digit number) do
not match the French 'communes', which is the lowest administrative level,
and not at all the departements ! There may be one postal code for several
communes, but on the contrary, there may be several postal codes for only
one commune. For instance, 89450 is the postal code for Vezelay, Asquins and
more villages in Burgundy, but 75001, 75002... 75020 are postal codes for
Paris (the same for all big towns).

Of course, if you need only a small scale map, you may take the first two
digits of the postal code, which is for the departement, and so have a map.

5-digit postal areas may be mapped on a dataset called 'geoflcp'. You may
buy it online on the website i mentionned and receive a copy immediately.

As far as i know, there is no free dataset of French postal code areas.

Hope this helps ! :-)
CC
