Subject: RE: [gislist] Making the *Environmental* in Systems ResearchInsti tute somewhat less relevant
Date:  07/28/2004 02:40:01 PM
From:  Chad.M.NIELSEN .. odot.state.or.us

Anthony (and/or whoever cares),

(Sorry, I just found this interesting so I had to look it up. No offense
intended.)

The word "dribble" was originally used as a noun, as in "left-leaning
dribble" rather than a verb, as in "dribbling from the mouth."

According to Dictionary.com both Dribble and Drivel can be used as a noun or
a verb.

Here are the definitions listed in the Noun form -

Drivel:
Saliva flowing from the mouth.
Stupid or senseless talk.

Dribble:
A weak, unsteady stream: a trickle.
A small quantity: a bit.
Sports. The act of dribbling a ball.

So, maybe John's "left-leaning dribble" was intended for a lay-up.... Or is
it lay-in?

Regards,

Chad Nielsen

No, I used the word properly, "dribble" as in "dribbling from the mouth", as
in dribbling not-so-subtle eco-propaganda on an industry email list. Next
time I need a grammar check, I'll ask. I am a registered Independent, and I
challenge you to point out what "right-leaning" perspective I spewed ? Go
talk to Dr. Poracsky, Dr. Brower, Dr. Deuker, Dr. Lycan, etc. up at Portland
State and you'll know doubt get a rounded opinion of me, and I doubt anyone
would accuse me of being left or right, perhaps disenfranchised, but not
left or right.

With all due respect to the original antagonist, his defenders, and others
impartial yet fully annoyed by this thread, indeed, this does not belong on
the list per se, but, all would recognize that "geography" is an
indistinguishable component of politics, economics, and for that matter,
anything else that is important in the world. Geography is the science of
everything, and the GIS industry typically "walks point", and so, while
annoying and flagrantly a chance to bash each other, it is in fact relevant
and at times, healthy. Apologies once again.

Anthony
