Well I figured it out... in case you are wondering how or want a=20 reference - after I sent the original e-mail I found this:

Which gives a few options:
1. Use shape repairer - ShapeChecker Utility (also suggested by Megan=20 S.)
this did not work for me, I had a file with over 450,000 lines, and=20 afterward only had ~16,000. But I bet this works for smaller files so=20 I'll keep it.
2. Use the ArcInfo Workstation SHAPEARC command - this worked! It=20 brought me back to my last save so I did lose a couple hours of work -=20 but not the whole thing. Basically in ARC you convert the shapefile to=20 a coverage. =20
***this worked, I just converted it back to a shape. The link suggests=20 other methods for continuing along this route, but since I could=20 convert it - I was happy.***
