Subject: [gislist] (AV) adding comma-delimited text as table
Date:  08/25/2004 05:20:01 PM
From:  Rixanne Wehren

Hello Listers,

I'm having a very annoying problem adding tables from comma-delimited text
files.

I'm on AV 3.2a.

When trying to add a table by choosing Tables, then Project>Add Table, then
selecting a plain text file: the table comes up with just the first column
and it's entries, but not the other columns.

Why can't I get the other columns?

The really screwy thing is that after many repeat tries, it sometimes
works! and the whole table appears. I savor this, but I have many of these
to do, and can't work with something so unreliable.

Is there anything I should know about making the text files in the first
place?

These come to me as .csv files (comma-delimited), and I'm trying to get
them into ArcView as simply as possible. I am testing changing the suffix
to .txt, and sometimes it works.

I can open it in Wordpad, and everything looks OK. Checked for extra spaces
or commas.

Other tried methods include opening them in Excel and exporting in .txt or
.dbf, but Excel cuts off the longer entries (trims 254 characters to just
47), so I would like to eliminate it.

Also tried closing and reopening ArcView.

I'm not an experienced database manipulator, so any help would be greatly
appreciated.

thanks,

Rixanne
