=20 GIS people
I have been in the mapping field for close to forty years, and have = applied my trade around the world on varying projects. I find now when I = approach a city to solicit work in map revision and up dating the first = or second person that I meet states flat out "we do all our own mapping = in house"" we do not do any subcontracting". Now I know these people are = clueless as to what constitute mapping. My question is where in this = maze is the person who controls all the strings? And what do you call = old fashion mapping now?
I have been asked to define mapping as I see it.
Mapping has been from the first a record by humans of their travel and = observations.
Mapping is a compilation of the unknown being discovered so that those = coming after may benefit.=20
Mapping of the human genome was building a record of the human gene = discovery.
Mapping by Lewis and Clark was the logging down of their travels and = discoveries.
Captain Cook mapped the west coast line of the Americas and the Islands = of the Pacific.
When a GPS position is recorded on a manhole I would call that mapping. = Up until then you may visually know where the manhole is located and you = can direct someone to that location by referring to other visual = objects, but with the GPS position you can say it lays at this point = based on this reference.
If you take that manhole position and place it on a plan map of that = locality, then print a hard copy showing just that, I would call that = Cartography. You have taken information supplied by others and assembled = it into a useful tool.
Mapping in the field of Photogrammetry is the construction of lines in = two or three dimension, on paper or in CAD, to represent visible objects = on Photographs.=20
Mapping in the field of Cadastral Surveying is the construction of lines = in two or three dimension, on paper or in CAD, to represent visible = objects observed in the field.=20
GIS, as I understand, at least that which we constructed in the early = eighties, used maps created by mapping and added features beyond the = scope of mapping. This could be used to print cartographic products some = of which could be called published maps.=20
tyank you
