Subject: [gislist] Abbreviated Theme Metadata (ATM)
Date:  09/24/2004 03:15:00 PM
From:  Ken Sutherland

The recommendations below are helpful to me and to my ESRI customers in =
the dissemination of theme metadata information. In response to the many =
requests for metadata, I submit an abbreviated metadata form which has =
been more useable by ESRI empowered customers than volumes of other =
metadata information which explain for example everything about the USGS =
quad series and nothing about the particular theme.

An Abbreviated Theme Metadata (ATM) contains the following:

1. The map projection data (see below)
2. The reason for a theme map development
3. A full description of both the theme map and the data fields, at least =
the full name of each field.

The last two items are key ingredients lacking in almost all metadata I've =
read yet these items have the most applicable information content, i.e., =
to understand the reason for the map, the exact names of the data fields, =
and any rating, ranking, or other explanation of the classification system =
if that applies to any field.

This version of metadata has been helpful and expedient to our ESRI users: =
not a quick fabrication of information, yet more meaningful than a full =
set of METADATA!
