Matt, this can be accomplished by using the legend Description option.=20 If applying a single symbol to the layer, then click the Description button on the Symbology tab under Layer Properties. A dialog box opens allowing a multi-line text string if you type ctrl+enter.
If applying multiple symbols to the layer through either the Categories or Quantities symbolization mode, you can get at individual symbol Description through each symbol's context menu on the Symbology tab under Layer Properties. You must right-click on each symbol-value and choose Edit Description from the context menu, using ctrl+enter for multi-lines.
The legend item Descriptions are then enabled from the legend Properties.
That symbol context menu contains some other options worth knowing, such as the ability to create additional legend headings and move selected symbols under those headings.

Fellow list folk,
I'm using ArcGIS 8.3 at work, and I'm wondering if anyone out there has=20 found a way to force a <CR> in legend items. In other words, is there=20 any way to have a legend label print on two or more lines rather than=20 just one?
Mile grazie,
