Subject: RE: [gislist] GIS and computer configurations

Hello,

I'm not sure, if I understood your question.

Depending of your network traffic if you have a 100 Megabits network
connexion that means you can transfer, more and less 12.5 Mbytes (data) =
per
second. So I think it's enough for the size of your images.

You wrote:
"I run ArcGIS9 (Arc/Info and ArcView) and am looking to setup ArcIMS in =
the
(near) future."

It depends of the capabilities of your workstation:
You wrote:

Custom Standard CAD Workstation IBM IntelliStation Z-Pro Dual Prestonia
2.8GHZ/512KB
(4x) 256MB ECC DDR Memory
36.4GB 10K RPM SCSI HDD
73.4GB 10K RPM SCSI HDD
Integerated SCSI Adaptec Ultra Dual 320
48/24/48 CDRW
DVD ROM
NVIDIA Quadro4 280NVS
10/100 ENET W/WOL Adapter
Custom Win2k

If this are or could be the characteristics of your workstation, in my
opinion it's enough to run the applications you need. But :), if you =
could
put more RAM memory (1.5 Gigabytes), perfect.

Kind regards,

Luis Gon=E7alves Seco

Assunto: [gislist] GIS and computer configurations

Hello!

Could anyone help me out here on configuring my workstation? The =
current
one I have is sooooo sloooow. I need to ask for a specific =
configuration
that will work best and this is something I am not an expert on.

Information:

* The data is stored on a server and has some pretty large imagery (~20
megabytes).
* There is a Ethernet 10/100 Mbits/sec connection to the server.
* I run ArcGIS9 (Arc/Info and ArcView) and am looking to setup ArcIMS in
the (near) future.

I am the GIS person, use the software all day long to develop maps, some
spatial analysis, building a database and am moving into developing
functional applications.

This is my optional upgrade from what I have:

Custom Standard CAD Workstation IBM IntelliStation Z-Pro
Dual Prestonia 2.8GHZ/512KB
(4x) 256MB ECC DDR Memory
36.4GB 10K RPM SCSI HDD
73.4GB 10K RPM SCSI HDD
Integerated SCSI Adaptec Ultra Dual 320
48/24/48 CDRW
DVD ROM
NVIDIA Quadro4 280NVS
10/100 ENET W/WOL Adapter
Custom Win2k

I would like to know if anyone thinks this might be suitable for what I
need. Please let me know if there isn't enough information. (Also =
custom
standard means that this is a customized configuration that fits to my
company's standard.)

THANK YOU!!!!!
