Matt,
No matter what you do, ArcGIS will never run as fast as you think it should.
A lot of it is the OS and more of it is due to ArcGIS, and very little of it
is your system. This is assuming you have a) defrag your hard drive, b)
removed spyware c) scanned for viruses, and d) unloaded any non-essential
system-tray applications (just to troubleshoot). I'm running a Dell 650
Precision Workstation, Dual 3 GHz processors, 4 GB SDRAM, XPSP2, all ArcGIS
patches and updates, and it still chuggs along so slow. Fuggedaboutit.....
