I recently upgraded to Windows XP, ArcGIS 9: I still use AV3 only more as = a viewer than as an application software. Why? Because AV3 doesn't perform = well on XP as stated in the ESRI bulletin on OSs. Regardless of this minor = setback, I moved faster into V9 since AV3 was unreliable and so much = SLOWER than usual on displays and selections.
Then I wondered where I had read that V9 was so much quicker on loading = and moving to other projects? Because that's not true on this system = either, still a slow process even with a 3 GHz Pentium 4 CPU with 1 GB = RAM. So then I wondered how much time we all spend waiting on displays, = numerous regens in V9, selections, and other processes.
Call this computer "lag" time which takes up to 20% of our work lives. I = also drive 5 hours a week, 20 hours a month, 240 hours a year: so that's 6 = work weeks a year on the road. Average 20% of an 8 hour day for computer = "lag" time and we're in suspense 33% of our work lives, in this scenario = almost 16 work weeks a year EACH!
Yet I've never heard many complaints about this at work or any forum = discussions on computer "lag" time. We're trapped while the processor = takes 15 seconds to select an object or three minutes to select a record = from 100K entries: can we have some impact as a group on this matter, = i.e., synchronize new software with optimal hardware needs?
