If you haven't heard many complaints about screen redraw time wasted, then you must not be working around a lot of GIS folks. :)

I recently upgraded to Windows XP, ArcGIS 9: I still use AV3 only more as a viewer than as an application software. Why? Because AV3 doesn't perform well on XP as stated in the ESRI bulletin on OSs. Regardless of this minor setback, I moved faster into V9 since AV3 was unreliable and so much SLOWER than usual on displays and selections.
Then I wondered where I had read that V9 was so much quicker on loading and moving to other projects? Because that's not true on this system either, still a slow process even with a 3 GHz Pentium 4 CPU with 1 GB RAM. So then I wondered how much time we all spend waiting on displays, numerous regens in V9, selections, and other processes.
Call this computer "lag" time which takes up to 20% of our work lives. I also drive 5 hours a week, 20 hours a month, 240 hours a year: so that's 6 work weeks a year on the road. Average 20% of an 8 hour day for computer "lag" time and we're in suspense 33% of our work lives, in this scenario almost 16 work weeks a year EACH!
Yet I've never heard many complaints about this at work or any forum discussions on computer "lag" time. We're trapped while the processor takes 15 seconds to select an object or three minutes to select a record from 100K entries: can we have some impact as a group on this matter, i.e., synchronize new software with optimal hardware needs?
