Subject: [gislist] RE: gislist Digest, Vol 15, Issue 15
Date:  10/22/2004 01:45:02 PM
From:  Richard Norzagaray

This is disconcerting news considering that I recently was authorized to
order a new Dell GX280 (2.8 Ghz CPU, 1 Ghz of RAM, Radion ATI 128 MB
dual video card, dual threading)Computer. =20
I am currently experincing the (extremely) yard snail sluggish behavior
with my Compaq Deskpro EN Pentium III, 500k RAM with AV3 intalled and
the virtual memory increased to 3000 MB. As long as I have been using
both AV3.x and ArcGIS 8.x. (both since they were in beta versions) the
speed and refresh has always been that way. There also have been
ocassions where AV3 & ArcGIS 8 worked great and moved with great refresh
draw speed. I preferably like using ArcInfo 7.0 when I am able, it
works faster and I can get more done.

Does anyone know of any useful guides/white papers on how to set up or
upgrade one's PC to make ArcGIS faster? I'm running ArcView 8.3 on a
Dell (yuck) Penitum 4 (2.0Ghz) machine w/ 1Gb memory, an NVIDIA GeForce
64Mb graphics card, on XP, blah blah blah. I feel like my computer has
fairly decent resources, but ArcView runs painfully slow.

Thanks for your help!

- Matt

When was the last time you defragmented your hard drives? That often
helps my performance. Also nVidia has a driver that is supposed to be
ArcGIS optimized. Have you checked into that?

You can read this pdf "Performance Tips and Tricks for ArcGIS Desktop
8.1". A lot of the things mentioned in here apply to any version of
ArcGIS.

Good Luck,
