Subject: Re: [gislist] AV Performance
Date:  10/22/2004 03:30:01 PM
From:  Michael Gould

Sean, some good points there. Reminds me of one of the central messages
of Carr's "IT doesn't matter" article, now extended in a book: Once
everyone else (your competitors) also have the technology you have, then
it becomes a commodity (not an advantage) and so upgrading all the time
is counterproductive. More productive is to get the version you have
bullet-proofed. Spend less. Wait longer between upgrades. Maximize QoS
instead of novelty.

http://geoinfo.dlsi.uji.es/geodatos/IT%20doesnt%20matter.pdf (1.9 MB
on a slow server: hardware upgrades won't help you here!)

That said, many users are stuck with the latest-greatest beta version
because someone else bought it....and these users sometimes need
hardware upgrades to keep their head above water.

cheers,
Mike Gould
