Subject: [gislist] Suffolk County Traffic Statistics
Date:  10/23/2004 07:25:01 PM
From:  DickBoyd .. aol.com

Suffolk County does have a website for accident statistics on County
roadways. The address is http://www.co.suffolk.ny.us/. (Suffolk County Accident
Tracking).

Thank you for the link.

I am gathering information on glare related crashes. East-west roads with sun
elevation below 20 degrees to twilight.

Also I am gathering information on "disco affect" crashes. North-south roads
with sun elevation lower than ten degrees and patterned shadows.

The crash map at Shirley, New York looked promising. The "select by
rectangle" and "accident details" are of great help.

The details appear to be time lagged. The map indicates update to October 23,
2004. The newest accident details is July 3, 2004. Would it be asking to much
to identify the time period covered by the details? I can understand details
being time lagged to allow for quality control of data entries.

Selecting crashes near Shirley, NY also returned a crash near Middle Island,
NY. (05/14/2004, CR46/Moriches Middle Island Rd.) Was that a data entry
glitch, or a software glitch?

Is there a data element for which direction the crashed vehicle was heading?
I notice some location entries indicated SB or EB.

Is there a way to conform street names. Some crashes are reported on CR 46,
others on William Floyd Parkway. That appears to be the same road.

Land use and time of day suggests people were on their way to or from a
restaurant. If so, there is a captive audience and a window of opportunity for
safety messages.

Were any of these pedestrian crashes, or single vehicle crashes?

There was no indication of alcohol or drug related crashes. Is that
information available?

For the gislist group. Do your sponsors list crash sites? What data elements?
