I may be missing the point, but http://www.irfanview.com/ does sequential batch renaming.
And it's free. :)

I am looking for a :: way to rename :: "en masse" all the photos for a given project area to :: something more "smart" :: (like alpha-numeric, etc. etc.) so that I can put all these :: location records :: in a geodatabase and have them find the correct photo when :: the hotlink :: button is used.
