Jonah,
There's a separate 'Performance Tips' that I compiled a few months ago: = the file below has some important points on V9/XP performance with all the = other variables. Thanks.

>From a previously forwarded email:
After much digging into ESRI bulletins under the subject name, I find that = both the OS and the network may be the problem: we run Netware and will = eventually switch to Microsoft as the main server: so that's the technology= buzz on this matter.
Yes, AV3 and ArcGIS can work OK on some previous versions of Microsoft, = i.e., Windows 2000: I noticed that my NT needed a memory increase to 512 = MB (minimum) in V9: so I received a new package with XP instead.
AV3 doesn't work as well with XP, practically non-functional as a = workstation so I use AV3 as an archive viewer of my AV3 work. I import AV3 = APRs to V9 as needed: note: ESRI text and color palettes don't always = transfer to V9 completely so ESRI needs to work on that: however, I = haven't heard any complaints on that yet. =20
Without getting into great expense on the subject of workstation improvemen= ts for better ESRI V8/9 performance (see link below) as I said I recently = upgraded to Windows XP, ArcGIS 9 and as I said I use AV3 as a project = viewer rather than an application software because AV3 doesn't perform = that well on XP as stated in the ESRI bulletin on OSs and even with the = ESRI Arcview/XP patch on.
V9/XP/Netware don't perform well together as in loading and moving to = other projects, a slow process even with Microsoft Windows XP Professional = 2002, Service Pack 1: Pentium 4, 3.00 GHz CPU, 1.00 GB of RAM. Related to = the OS from what I've gathered: at least that's the latest theory.
We just weren't aware of any incompatibility issues in the complex matrix = of software, hardware, operating system, network server: hindsight again. = Note: Received a suggestion to use the best Software/Properties/Compatibili= ty color setting of 256 and a better graphics card, one with a built-in = video RAM (GT 126MB) rather than 32 or less.

PS: I received the following recommendations from ESRI Support: "Have you = tried increasing your virtual memory to 4095 MB? You can access your = virtual memory by going to Controlpanel/System/Advanced/PerformanceOptions = Under performance options, you should have a paging file or virtual = memory option. You can try increasing both the min and max virtual memory = settings to 4095 MB and see if that makes a difference. Are you accessing = this data locally, or on a network server? I have included a link below = that outlines the problem of slow network data access, and a workaround = solution."

See attached file (22 KB) on Today's Topic below: some performance, platform, network, and V9/OS issues with the XP: good luck and best = wishes. Maybe when XP has SP3,4,5.
