Honestly, I hate to promote Microsoft products... but I would stick with Word for doing routine newsletter type stuff that requires frequent publishing. Set up a template and stick w/ it. But, for custom graphics (flyers, trade show graphics, etc) I would get Adobe Illustrator. It's not super-simple to learn, but taking a class on Illustrator would fix that. The advantage of using Illustrator is that it works w/ AutoCAD without any additional extensions and it can be adapted to work w/ GIS by adding extensions ($$).
