Subject: RE: [gislist] DTP Software suggestions?
Date:  01/05/2005 02:05:01 PM
From:  Jame Mackson

I think as far as a simple straight forward program to use for this, your
best bet is going to be MS publisher. You will have a great deal of control
of the layout and astetics of your document with the same ease of use with
3rd party applications as word, (OLE is a great thing) Word can be very
cumbersome to work with, especially when you are trying to figure it out on
your own... this is only my opinion but I have been thru this quiet a few
times and have had very good luck with publisher.

Rick -

Honestly, I hate to promote Microsoft products... but I would stick with
Word for doing routine newsletter type stuff that requires frequent
publishing. Set up a template and stick w/ it. But, for custom graphics
(flyers, trade show graphics, etc) I would get Adobe Illustrator. It's
not super-simple to learn, but taking a class on Illustrator would fix
that. The advantage of using Illustrator is that it works w/ AutoCAD
without any additional extensions and it can be adapted to work w/ GIS
by adding extensions ($$).
