Subject: RE: [gislist] Hyperlinking - quick question
Date:  01/11/2005 01:40:02 PM
From:  Filbert, Katie

Hi,

I would use relative paths instead of absolute paths to files, when
including hyperlinks in tables. Using your example, use can put
"etc.tif" in the table, so long as that file is in the same directory as
your data. If "etc.tif" is in another directory, such as
"c:windows empimgetc.tif", use "..imgetc.tif".

Then, in ArcGIS, I would right-click on that point data layer, select
properties, and the display tab. There, I would select "support
hyperlinks using field:", select the field containing the hyperlinks,
and check the "Document" option. Then, using the "Hyperlink" tool -
lightning bolt- (as oppsed to the identifier tool) from the toolbox
shortcuts, I can then click on the points on the map and automatically
open those linked documents.

Your example gives an image file, which would open in the default
program for tif files (such as Photoshop, "Microsoft Photo Editor", or
whichever program you have .tifs associated with). The link could also
point to an executable file, a help file, or any other type of file. In
the "display tab" for the data, you can also choose URL option, to open
a web page.

Best regards,
Katie Filbert

Not sure if this can be done or not... but I have hyperlinks set in the
attribute table of a point file. When I select the identifier tool to
view the hyperlinks, I would like to see instead of the full directory
path to the document or image, (such as
c:windows empmyfolderetc.tif) an alias or just the document name
(from above example - just etc.tif without the full directory path).

How do you do this?

Thank you in advanced!
